Step 4 In Avoiding Heat Stroke: Finishing the Forest Smock

Project Specs:

  • Fabric used: 3.5 oz linen from Fabrics-Store.com in the color Bleached. This is hands down my go-to lightweight linen. 2.5 yards, and then some.

  • Blackwork on collar and cuffs. Scale: 1/14th of an inch.

  • Patterns used: the Motif Smock, ish

  • First event attended: TBD.

The Forst Smock is finished!

The changes I made during construction on the Motif Smock's basic pattern turned out to be for the best. Adding the straight topped sleeve and arm gore made for shoulders that were significantly more flexible for donning, doffing, and archery. I'm very pleased with it.

Pattern sketch for the cuff design.

I ultimately went with the original plan for the cuffs (above) as shown in the last post about it with the leaves and the acorns. I think they're so cute and can't wait to wear this one around. I have ultimately found that for cuff decoration, I get the best results when I hem the cuff and any openings at the wrist, and THEN do my embroidery. The result is that the pattern is lined up better and doesn't have any of the hemming stitches interrupting the blackwork.

While not an overwhelmingly difficult project, I am really really thrilled with how the embroidery turned out, and am pleased to have a versatile AND comfortable piece for my staple wardrobe.
